Knitting Lingo<\/a><\/p>\n

Is there a\u00a0secret code in the world of knitting?\u00a0\u00a0In order to fully relate\u00a0to other knitters, who knew\u00a0we had to learn not only the written pattern abbreviations\u00a0but also the hidden meanings of acronyms\u00a0currently winging their way around online knit n chat<\/em> groups, ravelry forums,\u00a0and any other chicks with sticks\u00a0<\/em>get-togethers.\u00a0 Is it just a matter of convenience?\u00a0 Or is this new-fangled lingo designed to\u00a0create a close-knit society who can essentially communicate in a secret language?<\/p>\n

Here are sixteen of the most common knitting acronyms decoded-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

FO \u2013 <\/strong>Finished Object (newly finished project).<\/em><\/p>\n

FOTN \u2013 <\/strong>Fresh Off The Needles (the needles are still warm to the touch).<\/em><\/p>\n

ISO<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> In Search Of (a term often used\u00a0on ravelry <\/a>to signify a yarn search between knitters).<\/em><\/p>\n

KAL \u2013 <\/strong>Knit A Long (a project worked on at the same time by a group of knitters).<\/em><\/p>\n

KIP<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> Knit in Public (taking a project to the streets).<\/em><\/p>\n

LYS \u2013 <\/strong>Local Yarn Shop (better than any ice cream or candy shop).<\/em><\/p>\n

LYSO \u2013 <\/strong>Local Yarn Shop Owner (that special someone who gets to rule the yarn castle).<\/em><\/p>\n

MKAL<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> Mystery Knit A Long (an organized group project especially popular on ravelry<\/a> with a series of\u00a0clues posted over a designated time period).<\/em><\/p>\n

OTN<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> On The Needles (current project).<\/em><\/p>\n

SABLE<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy (never enough yarn!).<\/em><\/p>\n

SIP \u2013 <\/strong>Sock In Progress (most current sock project).<\/em><\/p>\n

SSS \u2013 <\/strong>Second Sock Syndrome (just like a virus, it\u00a0hits every sock knitter at some point).<\/em><\/p>\n

TINK<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> (KNIT spelled backwards,\u00a0refers to using both needles to un-knit\u00a0a project one stitch at a time in order to repair a mistake.\u00a0 Not to be confused with FROGGING,\u00a0the\u00a0rip-it, rip-it method of unraveling stitches row-by-row).<\/em><\/p>\n

TU \u2013<\/strong> Toe Up (a specific type of sock pattern).<\/em><\/p>\n

UFO \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0UnFinished Object (the \u2018never speak of it again\u2019 project that hides in the shadows).<\/em><\/p>\n

WIP<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> Work in Progress (a current project).<\/em><\/p>\n
