Winter Getaway Styles

Monday, February 1st, 2016

February and March are traditionally the most popular months for escaping the winter chill and heading down south to a tropical destination.  This winter may have been unseasonably mild (so far) and the polar dipping Canadian dollar is making us all shudder yet the allure of wearing flip flops instead of boots and the sweet sounds of steel drums is still a very strong pull.  If you need a little more inspiration to get your suitcase out and your sunscreen packed, here are a few new splashy designs from Sirdar, that may encourage you to book a vacation just to wear them.

Noah’s Ark Knit Along

Monday, October 19th, 2015

The gang’s all here!  From stripes to polka dots, the animals are coming in two by two as we join in the fun on this adventure-filled knit along.  British toy designer, Sue Jobson has come up with an adorable menagerie of creatures, based on the Noah’s Ark theme, knit in two of Sirdar’s most popular and kid friendly yarns, Snuggly Baby Bamboo and Cotton DK, both machine washable and available in a rainbow assortment of bright shades.

Already in progress, Sirdar releases one free pattern to download every two weeks and just in time for gifting as a complete set this Christmas.  Each pattern includes instructions to complete a charming colour-matched pair of animals in the series of six.  If your needles are sitting idle, this might be the project to dive into.

Signs Of Spring

Saturday, February 15th, 2014

“Between winter and summer lies a beautiful spring”…….and it is never too early to start searching for signs of it.  For some, it can be a trip down south to get reacquainted with the warmth of the sun, a visit to a neighbor’s greenhouse to see tiny sprigs of greenery, or a walk through the mall to glimpse splashes of colour on mannequins.  Meanwhile for knitters, the quest begins at the local yarn shop browsing through the latest collection of patterns, and yarns, an instant way to refresh the senses and shed the cold weather fatigue.

A Well-Knit Home

Saturday, April 6th, 2013

Let’s sneak a quick look inside the pages of the all-new visually enticing design book, Knits For You and Your Home by Debbie Bliss, featuring more than thirty projects that dare we say are….. self-indulgent.  It is a well-known fact that knitters are exceptionally generous with their time and handiwork, the tendency is to knit for others first, sharing their special gifts with family, friends, and often charities.  In this book, Debbie turns things around and puts the focus on you, and your home, as she explains in her introduction-

“Whenever I meet knitters I am reminded time and time again that they are some of the most selfless of people; so many times I hear the refrain ‘I am making this project for a friend/partner/grandchild’ or the classic phrase ‘I never have time to make anything for myself.’ So with this book of over thirty designs I hope to entice the crafter – if only for a short time – away from the projects they are planning to make for everyone else and to knit something for themselves.”

With her incredible instinct for knowing what knitters really want- simplicity, style, a soothing palette, and a splurge of luxury now and then, Debbie divides this book into four sections, each one setting a relaxing mood with a specific colour-

Pamper is for the ultimate time out, so bring the spa into your home and put your feet up on a giant pouffe,

drift off with a sleep mask or make hearts containing relaxing lavender.”  D.B.
