Fall/Winter 2017 Preview

Tuesday, April 25th, 2017

It was an early peek inside the Toronto showroom this past weekend, as retailers gathered to view the coming attractions in yarns and designs for Fall/Winter 2017.  The trend in uniquely-dyed yarns has intensified, bringing out the best techniques in the industry to create an exceptional array of speckles, tonals and gradients.  Filling the shelves in the months to come, yarn cakes top the list, with the leading brands offering their own signature versions from fingering to chunky weight.  These flat-bottomed precisely-wound balls of yarn are dyed in long repeat colourways to create a very attractive rainbow effect. Shawls are still the front runner as the most popular knitting project choices followed closely by socks.  Pure fibre yarns are reluctantly taking a backseat to exotic blends, with upcoming collections featuring cashmere/merino, alpaca/linen, and llama/silk as the ultimate in touchable sensations.

Take a look at what’s to come for Fall/Winter 2017-

Footsie

Diamond Luxury Collection aims to keep sock knitters on their toes until late summer when Footsie hits the shelves in all its speckled beauty.  Sinfully-soft, this fingering weight yarn is a mix of superfine merino and nylon.

Olivia

Diamond Select goes the extra distance to offer exceptional value in a whopping 200g size ball of Olivia, a super soft chunky yarn with a very appealing colour-phased effect. Blankets, cowls, scarves, hats, mitts, and pullovers are all ideal projects for this supersized ball of fun.

Scala

Katia is ‘CAKE Central’ with more than five different versions in the works for early Fall knitting.  Scala (shown above) is a gorgeous boucle yarn in a rich ombre effect.

Earth

Katia also takes the lead in helping the environment with the addition of an exciting NEW yarn to their line up.  Earth is a chainette-style yarn spun from superwash wool and recycled plastic.  Yes, thats right, each ball contains the equivalent of three plastic drinking bottles!

Katia Concept Collection

Katia’s Concept Collection continues to grow with more natural blends added for Fall/Winter.  The ultimate in luxury yarns is complemented by a palette of classic neutral shades.

Debbie Bliss F/W 2017

Debbie Bliss will showcase two new yarns for Fall/Winter.  Look for Iris (shown above), a plush aran weight quality spun in a superfine blend of merino wool/cashmere and for alpaca fanciers, Aymara (shown below) is sure to be a hit with a shade range that is pure and natural.

Top Ten Knitting Trends Of 2016

Wednesday, December 28th, 2016

Looking towards a shiny new year, there can be only one word that best describes the feeling in the air, uncertainty.  In times of turmoil, and the unpredictable nature that surrounds the world, its those moments of calm, quiet activity that we crave, where knitting becomes an integral part of our well-being, whether its a shared passion with a group of friends or a solitary pursuit.  There is a sense of reassurance that comes from the rhythmic clicking of the needles, the constant motion of stitches intertwining and that blissful feeling of creating something entirely handmade.

This past year has brought some of the softest natural wool fibres to the forefront of the industry, introducing more independent dyers and spinners to the mix, shining the spotlight on a variety of new dye techniques, and established an even stronger connection to the origins of the yarn.  Knitting needles continued to evolve with a better grip, smoother handle, and super slick speed. Designers continue to push the boundaries with more asymmetrical-shaped sweaters, cardigans and tunics while shawls and socks still reign supreme as the most popular knitting projects.

While we can’t be certain about what’s to come in the new year, we can always look back and enjoy the Top Ten Knitting Trends of 2016 –

1. Cashmere.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder and this luxurious fibre had been on a timeout for far too long.  This year we waited for the warm and fuzzy arrival of 100% Italian Cashmere from the exclusive  Cardiff Collection in fingering, sport and aran weight.  If you already had the opportunity to pet one of these perfectly plump little balls ….you know it was worth waiting for.

2. Tonals.  Softening the colour spectrum, tonals totally rocked the list of hot dye trends.  This fascinating technique involves dipping yarn into a hot dye bath to achieve a shadowy play of light and dark tones.  In 2016, Debbie Bliss introduced us to her newest addition, Cashmerino Aran Tonals, a pleasing blend of wool, cashmere and acrylic.

3. The BIG Stuff.  Just when we thought we had seen the biggest and the bulkiest, out of the shadows appeared the BEHEMOTH!  By the time the leaves were changing into burnished shades of gold, knitters couldn’t wait to get their hands on Phil Big, a wool blend roving so unbelievably thick and plush, it was a challenge to grasp a single strand.  Available in four shades- Ecru, Grenadine, Lagon, Flanelle, each 500g skein includes a cowl pattern on the label plus these fun FREE patterns to download-

4. Socks On The Rocks.  When the temperature began to plummet, chunky knitted socks soared in demand.  These became an instant hit from the Rockies to the Maritimes and all points in between.  Our On The Rocks series of FREE patterns kept right on rolling with one new accessory added each week, celebrating the outdoors in typical Canadian style.

5. Caracol.  Malabrigo picked the perfect time of year to spread a little Christmas joy when they unveiled an irresistible thick and thin polar weight merino in twenty-four stunning colourways resembling the artistry of stained glass.  Caracol.

6. Melodies Of Life.  This pretty gift set came ready to wrap with a shiny big bow and to the delight of knitters everywhere included some extra sweet trimmings.  Knitter’s Pride revealed the latest luxury box set in mid-October but only in limited supply, causing a mad dash to local shops for Santa’s special helpers.

7. The Messy Bun Hat.  Also known as The Holey Hat, this trendy topper became an Internet sensation on Pinterest and Ravelry right before the holiday season.  Its a simple project and requires just one skein of our Tradition Chunky.  Download the FREE pattern here.

8. Blanket Scarves.  Skinny little scarves are out and oversized ones are definitely in.  The thicker the better, for burrowing into on frosty days.  This one is worked from the top down in three shades of Tradition Chunky.  Look for the pattern right here in early January.

9. Sustainability.  As knitters become increasingly more aware of the yarns they are choosing, feeling a connection to the environment and knowing that the wool is locally sourced is equally as important.  Baa Ram Ewe is an impressive addition to our line up, a small boutique business located across the pond in Yorkshire where the journey from sheep to needles begins in the neighboring fields with flocks grazing in the fresh air and local mills carrying on their woolly heritage of spinning the fleece into skeins.

10. Shades of Grey.  By far the most popular colour obsession in the knitting world, grey stands out as the new neutral. Whether you spell it ‘grey’ (English) or ‘gray’ (American) it is a strikingly elegant shade that suits pretty much any pattern or choice of stitch work.  It sits right between black and white and is defined as achromatic, meaning that it is quite literally a non-colour.  Bunny shade no. 200 (shown above).

World Wide Knit In Public Day

Tuesday, June 14th, 2016

Each year, on a particular Saturday in June, knitters can be seen flocking to public spaces such as parks, coffee shops, yarn shops and libraries, with project bags in tow in recognition of World Wide Knit In Public Day.  This year on June 18th, the special one day event will not only bring knitters outside their comfort zone, but also help to promote the social aspects of the craft and foster friendships throughout the community.

Danielle

Danielle Landes

Originally created in 2005 by Danielle Landes, an avid knitter from St Peters, Missouri who was inspired by one simple idea, ‘to unite knitters across the world by establishing an annual celebration organized entirely by volunteer hosts.’  In the first year, there were approximately twenty five events held around the world.  Since then, that number has crept up into the thousands with more than thirty-five countries now participating in World Wide Knit In Public Day.

Yarn Crawls

Monday, June 6th, 2016

What could possibly be more exciting than spending an afternoon browsing through your local yarn shop?  How about inviting your friends to join in the fun on a self-guided tour to visit as many as you can!  Yarn crawls are a relatively new phenomenon, taking place primarily during the early spring or late fall and they are quickly becoming the hottest ticket in town.

The ultimate road trip for knitters is an organized event which features any number of participating shops within a designated area, either city-based or spread out over a combination of rural towns.  Yarn crawlers are given access to a printed map pinpointing each location and a passport which is to be stamped at every shop.  This will eventually be handed in at the last stop on the crawl and redeemed as an entry in a grand prize draw.  Each shop will have a listing of special events posted beforehand, which can vary from trunk shows, demos, designer meet n greets, discounts, and free patterns designed especially for the event.  The length of a yarn crawl can vary in duration, over a weekend, a few weeks or an entire season, such as this upcoming one in Ontario which will commence on June 18th and wrap up in September.

The Lakeside Yarn Crawl has been an annual event since 2014, taking place around the lower tip of picturesque Georgian Bay.  This year there are twelve shops to visit, each one showcasing its own unique collection of yarns, accessories and designs.

Here are ten helpful tips on making the most of your next yarn crawl-

1. Do a bit of research beforehand.  Check shop websites to get a general layout of what they specialize in.  That way you won’t feel overwhelmed the moment you walk in the door.

2. Wear comfortable shoes and pack snacks to keep your energy levels up.

3. Keep a project list handy with tension and yardage requirements in order to match up yarns.

4. Check in advance for shop hours to avoid any disappointment.  Ask about any scheduled events and make a note of the time and day to plan your visit around.

5. Take time to look for the unique specialty items that each shop has to offer.

6. Carpooling is a necessity!  Why travel alone when you can enjoy the company of your knitting pals and most importantly have someone to enable your yarn purchases.

7. If your yarn crawl takes you too far from home, book a B&B in advance.  Less time spent driving will allow more time for knitting.

8. Wear your latest hot off the needles project.  There will be plenty of smiles and comments to break the ice when stepping into a brand new shop.

9. Don’t forget to enjoy the scenery along the way!

10. Check out active group listings on Ravelry to find an upcoming yarn crawl in your area.

The Art of Detangling

Monday, February 15th, 2016

There is a secret society in our midst and apparently very few of us are even remotely aware of it.  Imagine a place where you can mail in or drop off your tangled, tousled bowl-of-spaghetti-like yarn, and magically it appears one day in your mailbox neatly-wound into a plump cake, ready for knitting.  Who are these white knights who gallantly take charge and restore a measure of calm and order to our knitting world?

A group on Ravelry known as Knot A Problem, consists of close to three thousand detanglers from twenty-seven countries, all eager to offer their invaluable services at a moment’s notice.  Suzie Larouche from Toronto, Ontario, also known as ‘Gloxie’ on Ravelry, is one of these detanglers.  Having knit for over sixty years, Suzie has experienced more than a few of her own snarled skeins, “I never really chose to detangle for others, it just happened.”  Being inclined to help others, she remembers her first real assignment taking place at her lys, The Purple Purl, when a lumpy tangled bag of lace weight silk arrived, showing obvious signs of being tossed around like a salad during shipping.  “That was the beginning of a full week of very painstaking detangling” sighs Suzie, “ten kilometres of it in all!”

IMG_0480

Suzie explains, “A tangle is essentially a piece of fabric that needs to be unwoven and one of the most common causes with commercially prepared skeins is careless handling.”  There is a right way and a wrong way when it comes to winding skeins and Suzie shares her secret for success.  “To avoid the woes of a tangled skein,  first find one of the ties and hang the whole skein on your finger from that tie.  Make sure that the tie goes around all the strands and that they do not cross over it.  Next, loop the skein around both hands, holding them as far apart as the skein will allow.  Give the skein a good shake, as if to place your hands even farther apart.  This will settle the strands neatly in order.  Now the skein is ready to place onto the swift for winding into a cake.”

IMG_0775

Detangling is a complex labyrinth (not for the faint of heart) and requires the utmost in patience and perseverance yet those who choose to do this task for others seem to find it meditative and relaxing.  Anyone with a background as a sailor or fisherman just happens to be naturally good at this, having a knack for loosening knots.  Yarns spun with either silk or mohair can be a real nightmare, they tend to be clingy and much more prone to matting and tangling easily.  Suzie recalls her biggest challenge, a skein of lace weight merino that came apart while being dyed in a pot.  “It should have been left to die a natural death, but I loved the shade of red I had obtained and decided to give it a go.  It took me from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, doing nothing else except eat and feed the cat.”

Should you find yourself in need of a detangler, contact Gloxie on Ravelry or check online at Detanglers By Location.  All it takes is a request for help and then a short wait for a reply from your nearest detangler.  You will be required to pay postage both ways and include a self-addressed envelope for the return trip.  A little thank you goes a long way and is always well appreciated.

A Very Merry Yarn

Monday, December 21st, 2015

There is beauty in simplicity and this festive season is the perfect time to scale back on the gift wrapping and remember that less is more.  What truly matters is the heartfelt message behind the gift and not the flashy bow or gleaming metallic paper that gets ripped off in an instant.  Dig into your yarn stash and add a more personalized touch to your gifts with a few of these homemade ideas.

Skip the shiny foil paper, and opt for a more natural look with a roll of kraft paper or this week’s newspaper.  Topping off the gift with a fluffy pom pom takes only four fingers, a ball of worsted or chunky weight yarn and a few minutes to make.  See video here.

You can brave the crowds and stand in line to buy a handful of holiday gift bags that will ultimately end up in the recycle box on Boxing Day or you can schedule in a craft session with the kids and encourage them to create imaginative hand-stitched ones with leftover yarn.  Tip:  A great Christmas card project for next year.

Make your gifts stand out under the tree with rainbow-hued remnants of yarn tied neatly in a row.  With so many cleverly-tied knots, the flurry of unwrapping will slow to a more enjoyable pace and provide inspiration for the kids to craft colourful friendship bracelets after the main event.  See video here.

Simple White Christmas Gift Wrap 3w

Simple and elegant, wrap a gift in a crisp white dinner napkin or a linen tea towel.  Tie a few yards of white yarn around the outside and tuck in a sprig of rosemary or fresh pine for a woodsy scent.

Yarn-Ball-Wreath

This is the ultimate gift for a knitter and one that will keep on giving well into the new year.  A yarn wreath serves as a cheery welcome during the holidays, plus it will provide hours of knitting enjoyment for weeks to come.  Choose yarns in similar weights; fingering for socks or shawls, worsted for hats and mitts, or bulky for cowls.  Wind into palm-sized balls and tie onto a wreath form using a contrasting colour for easy removal.  Print off a few patterns for inspiration and tuck inside the yarn balls.  Finish it off with a pair of wooden needles.
